Like Pompeii, Herculaneum was lost when Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, however, while Pompeii was covered in ash, Herculaneum was covered in mud which solidified and entombed the city. Though it has been much harder to excavate -only ¼ of the site has been unearthed so far – the ruins are generally better preserved. Even wood materials have survived (see the House of the Wood Partition), as have a number of  second stories.

30 contemporary Italian artists confront the most classic “œtopoi” of all time, the face and the human figure, with expressiveness and originality, alternating between traditional techniques (oil painting, pastels, sculpture, etc.) and using inventive and innovative techniques (collage of comics or various materials, computer graphics, montages, assemblages of recycled materials).

Sunday January 24th at 10.30, 11.30 and 12.30
Tickets are 8,00 euro and include entry to the museum

A work of extreme simplicity and great emotional impact: 23 paintings of Caravaggio are brought to life using the bodies of the 8 actors and the use of everyday objects and draped fabrics.  A single beam of light illuminates the scene, rendering it boxed as in an imaginary frame.  The music of Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach and Sibelius will be playing in the background.
