This year, this institutional initiative Maggio dei Monumenti (May of the Monuments) reaches its XXI edition.
The event will open with a prologue over the last weekend of April, from the 24th to the 26th, dedicated to Giacomo Leopardi, to his life and his works, on occasion of the restoration of the tomb of the poet in the Parco Vergiliano in Naples.
The main events will take place over the weekends of May, from 1st to 31st, from Friday to Sunday, and on 1st and 2nd June.
May of the Monuments will be focussed on music and in particular its “cori” (“choirs”), in the historic musical places in Naples, such as the ancient conservatoires and theatres and the contemporary sites, on the roads of artisan production and exhibition of musical instruments and the many stories and legends inspired by music. The theme extends to the “cuori” (“hearts”) and “colour” (“colours”), to the love which is the common thread of Neapolitan artistic production and the colours that characterise the natural environment and national artistic heritage. In particular, each weekend will have its own colour:
- 1st weekend – 1st, 2nd, 3rd May: Red
- 2nd weekend – 8th, 9th, 10th May: Black and white
- 3rd weekend – 15th, 16th, 17th May: Blue
- 4th weekend – 22nd, 23rd, 24th May: Yellow
- 5th weekend – 29th, 30th, 31st May / 1st and 2nd June: Green
One of the main events of this year will take place on 23rd and 24th May – ‘Gran giostra dei sedili di Napoli’ – ‘Grand joust of the seats of Naples’. A real live jousting event will take over Piazza Plebiscito.
“….. a dozen knights will compete head to head and in full armour, representing the Seats of Naples. The seats (or Seggi or Piazze) were the administrative institutions of the city of Naples, whose representatives, called the Elect, from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century, gathered in the convent of San Lorenzo to try to achieve the common good of the City. They were in fact the “districts” which represented the Nobles of the time.”
There are also many other medieval and horse based events planned for that weekend. As the program is released, the events will appear on our Events pages.
