On 28th July 2013, tragedy struck.  A coach carrying pilgrims from Pozzuoli, coming back from a trip, flew off a viaduct, killing 40 people and leaving only 8 survivors.

To remember the victims of the tragedy, local artist Lello Lopez created ‘La Scala’, a huge spiral structure, which could be seen to resemble DNA.  The artist said “The ascents and therefore the spiral pattern of the work signify always transcending the human condition and to penetrate higher cosmic levels.”  The structure was inaugurated on the first anniversary of the names of the victims are inscribed in the base of the structure.

The art installation can be seen in Piazza del Ricordo (ex Largo Palazzine) in Pozzuoli.
