Hello! Is everyone ok? Feeling festive yet?
Here are some of the great things happening in Naples this weekend.
If you don’t fancy ‘Magic in the Moonlight‘, then on Tuesday 16th December at the Cinema Academy Astra, there is ‘Mr. Peabody & Sherman‘, in English with Italian subtitles, for free!
On Saturday 13th December there’s a very special night – ‘Notte d’Arte 2014‘ – A great opportunity to experience the Centro Antico. The streets and squares of the historic centre will be the scene of high profile cultural, food and wine events. Churches, cloisters, museums and monuments will be open all night.
On Saturday there is also a talk, in Italian, at the Duca di Martina Ceramics Museum – Fra draghi, fenici e “cento antichità”: l’affascinante universo dell’iconografia orientale – con Maia Confalone, storica dell’arte.
Sunday 14th December sees the second of the three Sundays of ‘Christmas in the saddle – Christmas at the Hippodrome Park of Agnano‘. A very special day with a magic village of gnomes, fairies and elves, traveling show, a fairytale atmosphere, the little spirits of the population of little people will delight the participants with stories, music, dancing and singing, and much, much more.
Another event on Sunday 14th December is ‘P”e vicoli e vicarielli dai Vergini all’Anticaglia‘ – A guided tour and theatrical foray, at the Basilica di S. Maria della Sanità, in celebration of the Quartiere Sanità and its very skilled craftsmen and traditions.
Also on Sunday 14th December, GAN (Gruppo Archeologico Napoletano) are running a guided tour of The Villa di Caius Olius Ampliatus in Ponticelli.
MUSIC AND DANCE
On Sunday 14th December there will be a candlelit Christmas carol service at Christ Church Naples, in English.
Also on Sunday 14th December is Lars Ulrik Mortensen and the European Baroque Orchestra in concert, at the Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace), as part of the Alessandro Scarlatti Association 2014/15 Concert Season.
The many Christmas fairs around Naples are now in full swing and will run until after Christmas.
The Naples Antiques Market is on this Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th December. Whether buying or just browsing, the market’s eclectic assortment of antiques and junk will keep you occupied for hours and will make for a great weekend jaunt. The market takes place on the Lungomare.
The Campagna Amica Coldiretti Market will be held on Saturday 13th December (in Piazza S. Di Giacomo in Posillipo, Piazza S. Mercadante on Corso Vittorio Emanuele and at Vulcano Buono in Nola) and on Sunday 14th December (at Piazza Immacolata in Naples, Viale Leonardo da Vinci in Portici and at the Parco delle Acacie in Via E. Segrè in Casavatore). You’ll find local products and healthy and affordable food with low environmental impact: fresh fruits and vegetables, wines, olive oil and vinegars, cheeses, honey, salumi, bread and bakery products, and plants and flowers.
Sunday 14th December, the Mercato del Contadino, a market of all the best local produce, is being held in Piazza Carità.
STARTING THIS WEEKEND
On Saturday 13th December, ‘The Buchner Boxes‘ photography exhibition by Luigi Spina begins, at the National Archaeological Museum. The exhibition shows black and white photos of the archaeological ‘Buchner Boxes’, and runs until 6th January 2015.
Starting on Sunday 14th December, and running until 6th January 2015, is a ‘Presepe Art Exhibition‘, at Castel dell’Ovo. Your chance to see some of the incredible work of the beautiful, traditional Neapolitan “presepe“.
FINISHING THIS WEEKEND
The ‘Music in Sacred Places‘ series of concerts finishes on Saturday 13th December, at Santa Maria Donnaregina, with ‘Mysterium Vocis’.
